LAPO MICROFINANCE BANK SCHOLARSHIP AWARD CEREMONY SPEECH 2012
AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE CHAIRPERSON OF LAPO SCHOLARSHIP BOARD PROFESSOR CHRISTIANA OKOJIE AT THE OCCASION OF THE 5TH LAPO MICROFINANCE BANK SCHOLARSHIP AWARD CEREMONY ON OCTOBER 4TH 2012, AT LAPO HEAD OFFICE, 18 DAWSON ROAD BENIN CITY, EDO STATE.
Guests of Honour,
LAPO Management staff,
Clients and parents,
Representatives of the media,
Ladies and Gentlemen
On behalf of the Scholarship Board of Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO), I wish to welcome you to the fifth round of scholarship awards to children of clients of LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited.
For the purpose of information, LAPO’s scholarship was endowed with the sum of $10,000 as cash prize LAPO received in 2006, when the Microfinance Bank as a Microfinance institution won the Grameen Foundation Award for Excellence in Microfinance. Over the years, LAPO Microfinance Bank has been making contributions to the Scholarship Fund. The scheme is focused on supporting secondary education. This is against the backdrop of the fact that children from low-income households usually drop out of the educational system at the secondary level. However, few awards for tertiary education will be provided to children of clients who are in dire need this year.
A total of 520 awards for secondary education will be provided this year. This brings the number of awards since the inception of the scholarship scheme to 1,224. A total of 50 children of non-clients of LAPO in very difficult situation have also benefitted from the scholarship awards.
As usual, the Scholarship Board adhered strictly to the agreed procedures in the selection of beneficiaries. The selection process consisted of balloting and written tests across all regions of LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited.
The Scholarship Board is appreciative of the support provided by LAPO Microfinance Bank field staff during the selection process. I wish to congratulate the awardees and their parents and guardians.
With the huge request for the awards, I wish to use this opportunity to passionately appeal to well-meaning individuals and organizations to support the scheme. Bringing out a brighter future of our children particularly those from low-income households is our collective responsibility.
I wish to commend LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited for instituting the scheme as I urge other pro-poor organizations to emulate this gesture.
Finally, I congratulate every one of us for being part of history in redefining our future today.
Professor Christiana Okojie
