Prof Iyawe Leads Discussions As LAPO Holds Devt Forum, Nov. 18, 2020

Prof Vincent Iyawe, a former Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Benin will lead discussions as critical stakeholders deliberate on maternal and child health issues at this year’s Annual LAPO Development Forum.

The event, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, via zoom webinar from 10:00 am shall be chaired by Hon. Justice Samson Uwaifo (CON), retired Justice of the Supreme Court.

According to the Coordinator, James-Wisdom Abhulimen, the Forum will proffer practical solutions to the challenges inhibiting primary healthcare in Nigeria, advocate for workable policies and strategies to ensure access to quality health care in rural communities, contribute to lowering child and maternal mortality, and improve basic health care for all.

About 1,000 distinguished personalities including government functionaries, elected representatives, policymakers, and critical stakeholders drawn from the health sector, government agencies, academia, Civil Society Organizations, Professional Associations, Local and International Development Organizations.

Initiated in 1994, the LAPO Development Forum has become a rallying point for discussions and provision of workable solutions to identified issues in poverty and development in Nigeria. Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR are among prominent personalities who have delivered key papers at the Forum in the past.

A non-governmental and not-for-profit development organization, LAPO addresses the root causes and manifestations of poverty such as poor health, economic powerlessness, discrimination, ignorance, social exclusion and gender inequality through innovative financial and non-financial programmes targeting disadvantaged groups across the country.

Improving maternal health is critical to saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of women who die due to complications from pregnancy and childbirth each year. Over 90 percent of these deaths could be prevented if women in developing regions had access to sufficient diets, basic literacy and health services, and safe water and sanitation facilities during pregnancy and childbirth.

Stakeholders addressed these concerns at the November 18, 2020, Annual LAPO Development Forum.
