Special Guest of Honour
The Chairperson, LAPO Scholarship Board
Representatives of the Ministry of Education
Beneficiaries, Parents and Guardians,
Gentlemen of the Press
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am delighted to welcome you to the award presentation ceremony for the 6th round of scholarship awards to deserving children of clients of LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited.
LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited is committed to the economic empowerment of low-income Nigerians through the creation of access to responsive financial services on a sustainable basis.
As a pro-poor financial institution, the LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited supports activities which add value to the lives of low-income people and their children. These activities include the scholarship scheme, annual secondary school quiz competition, free legal services, health and social empowerment intervention programmes.
LAPO initiated the scholarship scheme in 2006 in its determination to touch the lives of Nigerians in many positive ways. This is in recognition of the fact that education is an instrument of economic empowerment and national development as it ensures a brighter, successful and fulfilled life for today’s children. Early childhood development is an investment for life. Increased investment in children today builds a better educated, prosperous and peaceful citizenry tomorrow.
In 2006, LAPO won the Grameen Foundation’s Award for Excellence in Microfinance which came with a cash prize of $10,000. The amount was utilized as a seed fund for a scholarship scheme for children of LAPO clients. The bank has, since 2007, been making its own contributions to the fund. The scholarship primarily covers secondary school education of the awardees. This is due to the fact that children from poor households usually drop out of the education system at the secondary/high school level. A total of 704 children have so far benefited from the scheme. With the positive impact of the scholarship scheme, the LAPO Scholarship Board decided to extend the scheme to accommodate University Education with effect from 2013.
With the formulation of our Sustainable Microfinance Policy, we promise that in the coming years, LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited shall expand its social empowerment activities. More of our clients’ children shall benefit from the scholarship awards; more women shall be assisted to manage their risks and we shall act to preserve the environment.
I want to commend members of the scholarship board of LAPO for their commitment to the realization of the goal of the scholarship. I want to acknowledge the support of GoldLink Life Assurance Plc for the scholarship scheme.
I want to use this opportunity to appeal to our partners and well-meaning individuals and organizations to financially support the scheme in order to reach a larger number of needy children.
I thank you all for gracing this occasion and God bless.
