CEO Speech on LOWLA 2021
WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE CEO OF LIFT ABOVE POVERTY ORGANIZATION (LAPO), GODWIN EHIGIAMUSOE PhD AT THE 9TH LAPO OUTSTANDING WOMEN LEADERSHIP AWARD HELD AT THE LAPO INSTITUTE, BENIN CITY ON MONDAY, MARCH 8, 2021.
Gentlemen of the Press,
Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am delighted to welcome you to this years’ LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award, a part of the activities put together to mark this year’s International Women’s Day with the theme, Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID 19 World.
As a development organization, Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) is passionate about women and committed to their overall development. For more than two decades, the organization has been at the forefront of bringing gender issues to wider attention, recognizing and promoting women’s contributions to the advancement of Nigeria.
From its inception, LAPO has been involved in community health improvement and playing a major role in addressing the challenges limiting the progress of women, including economic powerlessness, social exclusion, and ill-health. In spite of the challenges of 2020, the organization was still able to reach a substantial number of vulnerable communities with health intervention services. Over 1.7 million persons were reached with direct services and Information, Education, and Communication materials. We also improved national food security with the disbursement of N12.2 billion to 152,446 rural farmers under the LAPO Rural Development Initiative (LARDI). This figure represents 12% growth over the sum of N10.9 billion disbursed in the year 2019.
The LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award has become a part of our institution. It was instituted to acknowledge and reward women who demonstrated commitment towards making the world better for all. These women have surmounted enormous challenges in our environment to make a huge impact. The selection process is rigorous and over the years, had aided us to reach the true change-makers. I congratulate the winners of this year- Mrs. Felicia Funmilola Babalola, Mrs. Joke Kolaja Adesina and Christiana Ovieba Ebitimi. I wish to enjoin you to double your efforts. There is still a lot to do for our people.
We are greatly honoured and humbled by the presence of The Honourable Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Esther Amenaghawon Edigin. We are very grateful Your Lordship
I thank the Guest Speaker, Comrade Grace Obakina, Executive Director, Caring Heart Initiative.
God bless you.
