Ex-provost seeks more health centres for rural areas
A former provost of the College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Prof. Vincent Iyawe has said setting up healthcare centres will reduce maternal and child mortality in remote and rural areas.
He also said an extra health budget for health should be done for rural communities.
Iyawe stated disclosed this on Wednesday in Benin at the 27th Annual LAPO Development Forum with the theme: ‘Improving Access to Quality Maternal & Child Healthcare in Rural Communities: Issues and Perspectives.’
The university don said, “The maternal, newborn and child health indices in Nigeria are worse within the rural areas, as maternal mortality rate is estimated at 820 deaths per 100,000 live births in contrast to 350 deaths per 100,000 live births in urban areas.”
According to Iyawe, to achieve an increase in healthcare services in the rural areas, “extra-budgetary allocations must be made for rural communities.” READ MORE
