Brief Citation on Godwin Ehigiamusoe PhD, CEO, LAPO Group

Dr Godwin Ehigiamusoe is an accomplished social entrepreneur and a foremost microfinance practitioner who has applied the concept of social enterprise to successfully build a number of enterprises which address the needs of persons and businesses at the bottom end of the society.

In late 1980s, he founded LAPO (Lift Above Poverty Organization) – a successful pro-poor

development organization with operations in Nigeria and Sierra-Leone. The organization has evolved into a vast collection of mutually reinforcing institutions/businesses with interests microfinance, micro-insurance, micro-leasing, healthcare and education in Nigeria.

Dr Ehigiamusoe has been central to the development of Microfinance in Africa and actively participated in the formulation of the Nigerian Microfinance Policy, Regulatory and Supervisory Guidelines.

Dr Ehigiamusoe earned his first and second degrees in Sociology and Sociology of Development respectively at the University of Benin. He also holds a Doctorate degree in Policy and Development Studies with distinction in his dissertation on Policy Instruments and Financial Inclusion: A Comparative Study of the Ethiopian and Nigerian Microfinance Policies and Regulatory Frameworks at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He has attended several capacity enhancement and development programmes at the Harvard Kennedy School (2005); Lagos Business School (2010); IESE Business School, Barcelona (2010) and ISEAD Business School, Singapore Campus (2010).

In 2006, he led LAPO to win the prestigious Grameen Foundation Award for Excellence in Microfinance. He won the Model Entrepreneur Award – Nigeria of the FATE Foundation in 2008 and the Professor Schwab Foundation’s ‘Outstanding Social Entrepreneur for Africa 2010 Award.

In 2014, Dr Ehigiamusoe won with former Governor Peter Obi, the Lagos Business School’s Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2012, the Rotary Club of Benin City honoured him for his outstanding contributions to human development while the University of Benin, Benin City also conferred on him Doctor of Science degree (Honoris Causa) in 2016.

He has authored, Understanding NGOs (1998), Poverty and Microfinance in Nigeria (2000), Issues in Microfinance: Enhancing Financial Inclusion (2011) and It Can Be Done (The Mind Behind LAPO).

He is married to Mrs. Elizabeth Ngozi Ehigiamusoe and blessed with five lovely children. Dr Ehigiamusoe strongly believes that Meaningful development is only possible if the people at the bottom end of the society have full economic citizenship.

Profile of Chairman, Hon. Justice Samson O. Uwaifo (JSC Rtd, CON)

Hon. Justice Samson O. Uwaifo is a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He served as a High Court Judge, Justice of the Court of Appeal and the apex court during his over 40 years in the legal profession covering 10 years at the Bar and 30 years on the Bench. He has acted as a Legal Consultant particularly in the area of Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution at Patreli Partners and was Sole Arbitrator and Chairman of various arbitration panels.

Profile of Guest Speaker, Bishop (Prof) Vincent Iyawe

Bishop Prof. Vincent Iyawe is a renowned Medical Professor at the University of Benin, (UNIBEN) Nigeria. A Clinical Physiologist, he joined the services of the University of Benin in 1980 and has served in various capacities as Provost, College of Medicine, UNIBEN, Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences, UNIBEN, Head, Department of Physiology, Chairman, UNIBEN Board for Part-Time Programmes, Member, Governing Council, UNIBEN, Member, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Board, Member of Council, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and Chairman, Faith Mediplex Hospital.

A Bishop with the Church of God Mission International, Professor Iyawe is a member of numerous professional bodies including Physiological Society of Nigeria and Britain, European Society of Clinical Respiratory Physiologists and British Society of Sports and Medicine.
