LAPO, Others Commemorate National HIV Testing Day

Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) has commemorated the National HIV Testing Day, in collaboration with the Edo State Agency for the Control of AIDS  (EDOSACA), Edo State Ministry of Health and other partners.

The 3-day event featured rallies, free health screening and counseling on HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and prostate cancer at various locations in Benin City.

LAPO Zonal Manager, Jennifer Oviawe encouraged members of the public to take advantage of the free screening exercise to know their health status, take charge of their lives and protect their friends and family members against infection.

Earlier, the Executive Director of EDOSACA, Flora Oyakhilomen said the National HIV Testing Day was set aside to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment centres.

She said the theme,  “My Test, My Way,” emphasizes that there are different ways and places to get tested for HIV, including self-test at home, adding that the tagline, ‘My contribution to Ending the HIV Epidemic in my community,’ creates the awareness that tests and screenings are important to health of not just the person carrying out the screening but also to those around them within the community.

LAPO screened 42 men for prostate cancer, 42 men and 10 women for Hepatitis B and a number of other persons for HIV at the event free of charge with refferals and counseling services.
