LAPO Sensitizes 1.2m Community Members on Cancer Prevention

Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) in 2021 sensitized 1,282,826 community members on the prevention and mitigation of cancer under its LAPO Community Campaign for Cancer Control (LAPO-C4) programme.

Between January and December 2021, the project sensitized 221,933 community members directly screening 7,377 persons and referring 6,110 persons for further screening and treatment in approved health facilities; and 1,060,893 indirectly through media and Information, Education and Communication materials.

The Executive Director, Dr. Honestus Ayobami Obadiora made this known while addressing Journalists in Benin City. He said the organization has over the years been involved in combating cancer-related morbidity and mortality in Nigeria and improving community health through sensitization, screening and referral of community members.

Since its inception in 2016, the LAPO-C4 project has created mass awareness about cancer in target communities across the country under the project, sensitized 19,779,894 community members against cancer, screened 47,350 persons and referred 34,470 for further screening and treatment in government-approved health facilities.

Dr. Obadiora said “the organisation intensified efforts in 2021 due to the 2020 Globocan report that Nigeria recorded 124,815 new cases with 78,899 deaths, a 63% mortality rate. Despite this, according to the WHO, in 2021 the world crossed a sobering new threshold – an estimated 20 million people were diagnosed with cancer, and 10 million died. This, l attribute to poor access to screening services and inadequate awareness.”
