LAPO Combats Cancer, Enlightens 9,813 Community Members
Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) has intensified the battle against cancer through its LAPO Community Campaign for Cancer Control (LAPO-C4) being implemented across the country.
In the Fourth Quarter of 2023, the organization conducted massive cancer awareness campaign in target communities under the intervention project, sensitized 10,562 community members, screened and referred 533 persons for further screening and treatment in government-approved health facilities.
A total of 11,013 community members were reached through cancer Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials during the period, according to the Executive Director, Dr. Honestus Ayobami Obadiora.
A breakdown of the performance report indicates that 5,526 persons were reached in Edo, Lagos (1,331), Abuja (952), Rivers State (756), Enugu (659), Zamfara (680) and Kogi, 658.
Dr. Obadiora voiced his concern over the rapidly increasing incidence of cancer worldwide with reports indicating that poor countries will bear a greater burden of the disease by 2030. This has grievous consequences for Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa and home to over 160 million people.
The Executive Director expressed concern that despite the disease being a major threat to public health; only few developing countries have data on cancer incidence, accurate information and knowledge about the disease.
